Illustrated with 64 images — 31 of which have received international awards — this book takes readers on an expedition through Fan Ho’s conceptual and practical foundations of street photography. Sixteen insightful essays, originally published in the Hai Kwang Fortnightly, are presented alongside self-written prefaces, a short autobiography, and a reorganization of his iconic, award-winning photographs. This edition also features a curated selection of previously unpublished original negatives, newly scanned and printed. Fan Ho 何藩 (1931-2016)
Born in Shanghai in 1931, photographic career started at the early age of 14 when given his first Kodak Brownie from his father. Within the first year he won his first award in Shanghai. At the age of 18, he acquired his twin lens Rolleiflex with which he captured all his famous work after he moved to Hong Kong with his parents and continued to purse his love for photography.
In 1949, Fan Ho’s family relocated to Hong Kong, where he continued to pursue his passion—particularly in street photography. He later earned the title “Cartier-Bresson of the East.”
Fan Ho’s works garnered nearly 300 local and international photography awards and honors. His talents were soon recognized by the film industry, where he first appeared as an actor before transitioning into film directing, a career he pursued until his retirement at age 65.
Throughout his life, Fan Ho taught photography and filmmaking at universities around the world. His work remains in both private and public collections, including those of the M+ Museum (Hong Kong), Heritage Museum (Hong Kong), Bibliothèque National de France, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Santa Barbara Museum of Art (USA) and others.
